Medicaid payment integrity: patterns analytics can surface
What claims analytics can flag for review, and why a flag is the start of a question.
Flags are leads
Analytics can show that a provider, code, or claim differs from its peers. That is a reason to look, not a finding of wrongdoing. Good programs pair detection with human review and clear documentation.
Patterns worth looking for
- Peer outliers. A provider whose billing pattern differs sharply from similar providers.
- Duplicate or overlapping claims. The same service billed more than once, or overlapping dates of service.
- Unusual code patterns. Heavy use of a high-paying code relative to peers.
- Services that do not fit the clinical picture. Billing that conflicts with diagnoses or other records, which is where clinical data alongside claims helps.
Why context matters
A specialty practice may look like an outlier against a general peer group. Defined measures and reviewed logic keep comparisons fair, so reviewers spend time on real questions.
Use with your own program rules
Any review must follow your program's policies and applicable law. See how we approach this for state and federal payers and commercial insurers.
